Mug of Wisdom #29 / Gretchen Rubin

This quote by Gretchen Rubin (author of The Happiness Project) popped up on several blogs after the recent ALT Summit. My understanding is that Ms. Rubin was giving an address and told the audience that she had given up on trying to find work-life balance. Instead she was going to—well, the Mug of Wisdom will tell you what she said. I think it’s great advice.

Taking Chances / Design Mom Asks

{ Lily in our hotel room in Nanchang }

The other day I clicked on Design Mom for my daily fix and there I was! Gabrielle has a new feature called “Design Mom Asks.” She selects four or five bloggers and asks them to answer a question like “What’s the most wonderful gift you’ve ever received?” The question I got to answer was “What was the biggest chance you ever took?” You can read my response (and the others) here. Feel free to laugh at me, but I told Tim (rather breathlessly, probably) that this must be the way a comedian feels when she gets a gig on Leno.

It’s no secret that I have a total Mom Crush on Gabrielle. Yes, she has great ideas and is very generous and willing to share the blogging love through things like “Design Mom Asks.” But for me it’s something more than that. Sometimes I think that people don’t always do well with others’ success. So the fact that Gabrielle is so successful despite having a great marriage and pleasant children and staying slim after having six of them gives me hope that I don’t have to be a big, reality-TV-worthy mess for people to read my blog or be able to relate. It’s okay to be your best self. Or at least to try to be. And I love that she’s carved out an amazing creative space for herself, despite having such a large family. I have a feeling Gabrielle is good at not giving too much of her butter away.*

(* You have to read this post for that to make any sense.)

Happy Weekend!

{ image from little monster }

I’m heading out for the last of our Chinese New Year parties, but first I wanted to share some fun links with you:

  • The thought of sitting down with a spoon and my own little pot du creme au chocolat, preferably snuggled next to Tim with his own pot du creme, watching a good tear-jerker or romantic comedy makes me so happy. I think I know what we’ll be doing on Valentine’s Day….
  • Simple but really cute ideas for a Race Car birthday party.
  • I want this reading nook.
  • Over the weekend, I plan to sit down with a cup of coffee to read this essay about what the phrase “working mom” means nowadays.
  • Edible paint for decorating Valentine dishes.
  • I had no idea you could make scratch-off cards at home.
  • Other Downton Abbey fans. Hurray! (Didn’t your heart break for poor Matthew last week? What do you think of Mary’s fiance? A little creepy?)
  • Would something like this finally help me get on top of menu-planning?

Do you have big plans for the weekend? The girls and I are going to a party tonight where we’ll be making all kinds of Valentine-related projects. I’m in charge of one of the “crafting stations.” I haven’t put anything together yet (yikes), but I’m picturing something with jelly jars and Dove chocolates and red-and-white bakers’ twine. You know, just cram all the obsessions into one activity. If I could somehow work in red-and-white-striped paper straws, it’d be perfect.

Tim and Andrew get to go see The Lion King for a band field trip. Have you seen it? I remember needing a lot of tissues. And then of course there’s the Super Bowl on Sunday. What do you think of these Indiana-inspired snacks?

Have a great weekend, and I hope you’ll come back next week!

Don’t Just Give Your Butter Away

{ image }

Here in the midwest we have a tradition at our State Fair that involves young dairy princesses getting their images carved out of big slabs of butter. Maybe you have this tradition, too? No? One of Lexie’s godmothers was a dairy princess and when the fair was over she cut up her Butter Head and gave the chunks away as Christmas gifts.

I bring this up because I was trying to explain the feeling I have of constantly being chipped away at to my Georgia hermana the other day. And the image of the State Fair Butter Heads kept popping up. As a wife and daughter and friend and neighbor and mother of four, of course I’m going to give away a lot of, well, butter throughout the day. But the truth is that much of the time I feel like people are coming at me with a chisel and just scraping butter off at will.

Chinese New Year Parties / Planning Phase

Dragon Masks

{ image }

Whew! This was another one of those busy-literally-every-minute days. They’re not my favorite, but at least I get to check Annual Physical off my list. (Am I the only one who would rather visit the dentist than have a routine check-up?)

Next on the agenda are the Chinese New Year parties we’re hosting for Will’s and Lily’s classrooms over the next couple of days. We’ve done quite a few of these celebrations in the past, so we have the format down pretty well. I just had to come up with a good dragon activity for the Year of the Dragon. I like the Dragons on Parade over at Kaboose. We’ll have to skip painting the streamers, but otherwise I think the dragons will work great for a parade through the hallways.

(If your kids aren’t in school yet, the dragons would be a fun way to introduce them to the Chinese New Year. Just get some Chinese take-out, have a little parade around the house, and you have a party!)

Welcome

Hello! My name is Shannon Taylor and I’m a mom of four, originally from Minnesota and now living in Maryland. I "published" my first newsletter when I was nine, and since then, I’ve written and edited for magazines, websites, and textbooks. I started this blog when my kids were small to reflect on life, share ideas, and preserve memories. Now that my children are grown, I continue to use this space to document meaningful moments and practical ideas.

If you're in the mood for a bit of Christmas cheer, you might enjoy THE ADVENT BOX, available wherever books are sold. You can click on the cover below to learn more.

Pandas are back at the National Zoo! We were there within days of hearing the news. 😂 Bao Li and Qing Bao are enjoying the spruced-up panda home on the zoo`s Asian Trail.

We last saw the pandas during a trip to D.C. in May 2011. I`m not sure if it was Mei Xiang or Tian Tian who firmly kept their back to us, but it was pretty hilarious. (photo #7) Not only did we get to see those wonderful pandas, but we got to spend time with Alexandra`s godmother, Amy, who was on home leave from her job with the State Department. Amy`s a fellow Midwesterner I met when we were interns waaay back in the day. (We connected watching "Northern Exposure" at Thompson-Markward Hall, affectionately known as the Home for Wayward Women.)

Be sure to put "Visit the Pandas" on your itinerary when you come stay with us in Baltimore. ❤️

My mom practiced, practiced, practiced and got to sing at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of "A Vision Unfolding" by Minnesota composer Kyle Pederson. A truly beautiful, uplifting work. I hadn`t been to Carnegie Hall before, so to visit for the first time to watch my mom perform was really wonderful.

Before the concert, we met Mom and her fellow choir member, Kathy, at Patsy`s, just down the block. The traditional Italian food was perfect on a chilly, rainy day—and it was fun to see photos of the celebrities who`ve dined there over the years, from Rihanna to Frank Sinatra (the restaurant`s claim to fame is that it was his favorite).

Mom, Tim, and Will hadn`t been to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum yet, so we headed to lower Manhattan after the concert. As we walked silently through the exhibits, trying to take it all in, I was struck by the distance between the concert, "A Vision of Light," and the grief and darkness around us. I thought of the words Mr. Pederson shared in the playbill, "It is my hope that we lean into the invitation that the choir offers—that each of us might reach out beyond our comfort zone and seek to build bridges of care and connection, finding a better way of being in community." And that’s what art does—it offers light when and where we need it most.

Is there a more endorphin-pumping experience than working out to `80s music? I don`t think so! Thank you to @natalie_dancebody and @mindi_dancebody for a truly joyful workout this morning. So much fun to dance along with two songs the Dancing Mamas tapped to back in the day at our kids` recitals: "Footloose" and "Beat It"! I hope you do this again, @dancebody ❤️🔥🎉

Happy Valentine’s Day! I approach holiday greetings with more caution than I used to because I know these occasions can be painful for people who’ve lost someone. Which is pretty much everyone, especially when you get to be my age.

This day might not be the same as it was, but I hope you still have a valentine, whether it’s a romantic partner or a friend or a much-loved pet. Or yourself. We make good valentines because we know our favorite chocolate and what books we want.

I’ll always hang the Hearts on a String for any kid who’s home on Valentine’s Day, except not this year because the puppy would tear them to bits.

What a great Valentine’s message. 😅 Well. I do hope you have some treats today and you know I’m thinking of you fondly. ❤️
