Are there special comfort clothes you love to slip into at the end of a long day? Maybe yoga pants or a well-worn robe or anything flannel? Every day after school, Lily changes into yoga pants and one of her dad’s T-shirts. Her favorite is the one with Kermit. She’s only eight, but she totally gets the concept of comfort clothes.
Comfort clothes took on a whole new meaning for me during my three pregnancies. I had awful morning sickness—eighteen weeks of nausea, day and night. It was so bad that fabrics with even the slightest bit of stiffness bothered me. (This is one time when I hope you can’t relate!)
Luckily, Tim had a bunch of white, V-neck undershirts left over from his days at the Air Force Academy. These shirts had been washed and worn to the most wonderful, comforting softness you could imagine. Between the T-shirts and Harry Potter, I made it through morning sickness.
And when I got really big, I switched to Tim’s old USAF lacrosse T-shirt. It was just as soft and cozy as the other tees, but very stretchy.
The white T-shirts succumbed to holes long ago, but the lacrosse shirt is still hanging in there. It’s funny, really, how happy it makes me to slip that scruffy thing over my head. It’s like an old friend telling me it’s time to relax. I throw on a pair of bright blue Victoria’s Secret velour sweatpants (from an old Halloween costume) and a lavender robe of the softest flannel, take a deep breath, and head off to watch Downton Abbey.
Do you have favorite comfort clothes? Do you nab someone else’s clothes (like Lily and me) or do you have something of your own that you love to wear to relax?

I used to borrow my Dad’s and brother’s shirts all the time when I was a teenager. Now my daughter does the same thing! I turned up at the hospital to have my first baby in my husband’s tracksuit and underpants! I’d been borrowing his undies for the last month. We invested in a few more maternity clothes for me for my next two pregnancies you’ll be pleased to hear! And these days I live in comfy scruffies – you can’t look cool doing farm jobs. I just have to make sure I remember to change before I go shopping. It’s been known for me to turn up at the supermarket in wellies… not that anyone would notice or care in Boussac! It’s a very rural small town.

I have a hooded sweatshirt that is my comfort shirt, especially when traveling. I love the confidence of throwing it into the luggage, because it’s perfect for being comfortable. Camping up in the Brainerd area? Check. Kayaking out in Gloucester, MA? Check. Sitting on a beach early in the morning in Florida, reading? Check. 36 hours in the waiting room of the hospital, while your niece refuses to be born? Check. Standing at the top of Aspen, admiring the beauty of CO? Check. The only issue is that you can’t tell one occasion of my life from another, since I am wearing the same sweatshirt in all of my favorite photos!

I tend to like the old and familiar, too, Jackie, although now and then I crave something new to wear. I laughed at the idea of you not being able to tell the special occasions apart!

I have two / three oversized cardigan style sweaters ( of varying weights for different seasons) that I wrap up in as soon as I get out of my work clothes and on the weekends. I usually pair it with drawstring style polka dot pajama bottoms and a t-shirt.

That sounds wonderfully comfy—love the polka dot bottoms!
