Celebrating St. Lucia Day

We have several friends who celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 6, and even though I love the idea of putting shoes out for St. Nicholas to fill with gifts, we’ve never managed to pull this one off. It probably has something to do with the fact that we’re always recovering from Cookie Extreme, which always takes place the first Saturday of December.

We do manage to celebrate St. Lucia Day on December 13, though. I can’t take any credit for this. It’s all Lexie. I think her love of this special day was influenced by lots of things: Kirsten, the American Girl doll, who was given to us in a homemade St. Lucia dress by Great-Grandma Charlotte when Lexie was still just a baby; our Swedish and Italian heritage on my mom’s side (St. Lucia was Italian, but her story was really embraced by the Swedes); and the second-graders’ study of “Christmas Around the World” at her school.

Tim’s Mocha-Almond Christmas Biscotti

I was gone for a few hours yesterday afternoon doing a little Christmas shopping while Lily was at a birthday party. When I came home, the kitchen looked like a bomb had exploded. But it was worth it because Tim had made his Mocha-Almond Christmas Biscotti.

I got this recipe from a fellow editor years ago when we worked together at a publishing company. Lisa got the recipe out of a magazine in 1992, but my photocopy doesn’t say which one. It does, however, credit the recipe to food stylist Marie Piraino. I honestly don’t remember why Tim embraced this particular recipe and made it his own special holiday tradition. Knowing him, he probably saw me buried under a pile of projects and offered to help out. And when the biscotti turned out so well, he decided to stick with it.

Happy Weekend

I’m hoping my father-in-law will fill his suitcase and pockets with holly when he comes to visit us next weekend from Virginia. I think our Santas would look a lot better with some sprigs of real holly tucked around them. That’s one of the things I miss most about living in Virginia: the gorgeous varieties of flowers, trees, and shrubs. Imagine being able to go out into your yard and get all the fresh holly you want. But I shouldn’t complain as I look out the window at the snow-covered hills and trees. We almost always have a White Christmas here in western Wisconsin.

  • DIY stocking stuffers.
  • Festive jars (especially great for those who don’t like to wrap gifts).
  • And while you’re there, check out her fantastic-looking chocolate bark.
  • These paper ice cream ornaments would be great at a birthday party, too.
  • A glass ornament decorated 10 different ways here.
  • Felted bell ornaments.
  • These free “Dressy Cat” print-outs for the younger set are so cute, but I don’t really know how to describe them! You’ll have to check them out for yourself. (They’re definitely in the category of “something to keep the kiddos busy so you can get something done.”)
  • Our Christmas tree is very traditional, but it’s fun to see how others “reimagine” the basic tree.

Do you have fun plans for the weekend? Our plans include my mom’s wonderful annual Christmas concert at her church and decorating our tree while Tim makes his Christmas biscotti. I’ll be making a red velvet cake with sugared cranberries for our friends’ Christmas party. I made the exact same cake for this party last year, but our lovely hostess didn’t get any. So this time I’m going to squirrel away a big piece for her.

I hope you have a cheery and festive weekend. Please come back next week—I’ll have photos of our kitchen looking reminiscent of the 1878 flour explosion in Minneapolis. But Tim’s biscotti are totally worth it.

Gift Idea for a Godchild

I am blessed to have two beautiful little goddaughters. One of them I get to see often, but the other one lives far away in Georgia. For years I’ve tried to think of something special to give Ana for Christmas. Something meaningful that grows with her and lets her know she’s in my thoughts even though we don’t get to spend much time together. I liked the idea of some sort of collection, but never saw anything that felt right.

So I was ecstatic when my friend Jackie told me about the gift she gives her goddaughter (who is also her niece). Every year Jackie gives her niece a piece from a nativity set. Why didn’t I think of that? Jackie selected a nativity set made by Fontanani because they do beautiful work and have been around for a long time and aren’t likely to go anywhere. The first year, Jackie purchased the stable because her goddaughter was just a baby and didn’t know the difference. Since Ana is older, I decided to start her with the Holy Family. I can give her the stable next year and then give her an additional piece every year until she has a full set.

By the way, if you don’t have a Jackie in your life, you really should go out and get one. Not only does she have great ideas like this, but she is also the type to drop whatever’s happening in her own life to stay with your children for several days while your husband’s in the hospital and your mother needs a little break. I love my family, but there’s something special about the family we get to pick, isn’t there?

Christmas Tree Ornament Mobile

{ image by not martha }

I think this hanging Christmas tree mobile is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Megan at not martha swears it’s easy to make. I think it would be wonderful for Christmas, but I’m also imagining using this technique for a DNA science-project model. What do you think?

Welcome

Hello! My name is Shannon Taylor and I’m a mom of four, originally from Minnesota and now living in Maryland. I "published" my first newsletter when I was nine, and since then, I’ve written and edited for magazines, websites, and textbooks. I started this blog when my kids were small to reflect on life, share ideas, and preserve memories. Now that my children are grown, I continue to use this space to document meaningful moments and practical ideas.

If you're in the mood for a bit of Christmas cheer, you might enjoy THE ADVENT BOX, available wherever books are sold. You can click on the cover below to learn more.

Pandas are back at the National Zoo! We were there within days of hearing the news. 😂 Bao Li and Qing Bao are enjoying the spruced-up panda home on the zoo`s Asian Trail.

We last saw the pandas during a trip to D.C. in May 2011. I`m not sure if it was Mei Xiang or Tian Tian who firmly kept their back to us, but it was pretty hilarious. (photo #7) Not only did we get to see those wonderful pandas, but we got to spend time with Alexandra`s godmother, Amy, who was on home leave from her job with the State Department. Amy`s a fellow Midwesterner I met when we were interns waaay back in the day. (We connected watching "Northern Exposure" at Thompson-Markward Hall, affectionately known as the Home for Wayward Women.)

Be sure to put "Visit the Pandas" on your itinerary when you come stay with us in Baltimore. ❤️

My mom practiced, practiced, practiced and got to sing at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of "A Vision Unfolding" by Minnesota composer Kyle Pederson. A truly beautiful, uplifting work. I hadn`t been to Carnegie Hall before, so to visit for the first time to watch my mom perform was really wonderful.

Before the concert, we met Mom and her fellow choir member, Kathy, at Patsy`s, just down the block. The traditional Italian food was perfect on a chilly, rainy day—and it was fun to see photos of the celebrities who`ve dined there over the years, from Rihanna to Frank Sinatra (the restaurant`s claim to fame is that it was his favorite).

Mom, Tim, and Will hadn`t been to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum yet, so we headed to lower Manhattan after the concert. As we walked silently through the exhibits, trying to take it all in, I was struck by the distance between the concert, "A Vision of Light," and the grief and darkness around us. I thought of the words Mr. Pederson shared in the playbill, "It is my hope that we lean into the invitation that the choir offers—that each of us might reach out beyond our comfort zone and seek to build bridges of care and connection, finding a better way of being in community." And that’s what art does—it offers light when and where we need it most.

Is there a more endorphin-pumping experience than working out to `80s music? I don`t think so! Thank you to @natalie_dancebody and @mindi_dancebody for a truly joyful workout this morning. So much fun to dance along with two songs the Dancing Mamas tapped to back in the day at our kids` recitals: "Footloose" and "Beat It"! I hope you do this again, @dancebody ❤️🔥🎉

Happy Valentine’s Day! I approach holiday greetings with more caution than I used to because I know these occasions can be painful for people who’ve lost someone. Which is pretty much everyone, especially when you get to be my age.

This day might not be the same as it was, but I hope you still have a valentine, whether it’s a romantic partner or a friend or a much-loved pet. Or yourself. We make good valentines because we know our favorite chocolate and what books we want.

I’ll always hang the Hearts on a String for any kid who’s home on Valentine’s Day, except not this year because the puppy would tear them to bits.

What a great Valentine’s message. 😅 Well. I do hope you have some treats today and you know I’m thinking of you fondly. ❤️
