The Wedding Cookbook Project

Twenty-five years ago, when Tim and I were planning our wedding, I thought it’d be fun to give our guests homemade cookbooks as favors. I’m not sure why I thought this was a good idea. We were already dealing with the challenge of distance since I was living in Virginia and the wedding was going to be back in Minnesota. Plus, I was working at Special Olympics International and we were up to our eyeballs with preparations for the World Games in New Haven, Connecticut, that summer.

But I optimistically included blank recipe cards with the wedding invitations and asked everyone to send us their favorite recipes.

Lexie’s Leaving for College

It turns out that even if you’ve already sent one kid off to college, it’s still really hard to send another one. Did I honestly think there’d be anything easy in saying goodbye to this girl who makes me forget the rule about how you’re not supposed to be friends with your kids?

Chinese New Year / Chicken Lo Mein

We were snowed in yesterday, so I’m scrambling a bit to get caught up. Not that I’m complaining. The sun is shining, the snow on the trees is sparkling, and, as I write, Teddy is running in circles around the snow-covered yard. He is one crazy dog. Layla of Labrador is blissfully lying on a patch of ice. Lily even went sledding yesterday with her friends, who, luckily, have sleds. We sold all of ours in our big garage sale when we moved because everyone said it never snows on Bainbridge Island. (It does.)

Staying in Character

Lexie’s in the Winter One Acts playing now at Bainbridge High School. It’s a really cool show, with ten original plays written, directed, and performed by students. With musical acts in between.

I love this story about what happened during tech week rehearsals: Lexie plays a police officer who wears several different pairs of sunglasses. It’s part of the schtick. She kept dropping one pair and, finally, without breaking character, she just stuck them on over the sunglasses she was already wearing. It was funny and everyone laughed. She took what could’ve been an awkward situation and made it work for her.

Avocado with Crabmeat and Lemon

We all know that avocados are packed with dozens of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and good fats that help with everything from keeping our hearts and eyes healthy to boosting our immune systems and helping us maintain a healthy weight.

So we should be eating more avocados. But I can only eat so much avocado toast!
