Lily took tennis lessons this summer through our local community education program and got thoroughly hooked on the game. The best part is that her fabulous teacher, Lindsay, introduced us to the “mini net.” Have you seen one of these? They’re lightweight, portable nets that you can set up anywhere.
Since we live in the boondocks where there’s a sad lack of tennis courts, I was very happy to learn about the mini net.
I ordered the 18-foot Le Petit Tennis Portable net from Amazon. It cost $60, which is less than an afternoon at the movies for us. There’s also a 10-foot version of the net if space is an issue. You might want to pick up some Gamma Quick Kids tennis balls, too. They make such a huge difference! Regular tennis balls go flying all over the place and kids are more likely to get frustrated and give up (in my experience), but these puppies have a lower bounce so you can get some great volleys going. They’re also available at Target.
I’ve never played tennis on a team, but I’ve always loved it and this honestly feels like real tennis. It even got my heart rate up a bit! Every bit of movement helps, right?
And, of course, this is how we look in my mind:

This is awesome…I am going to let our DAPE teacher know about this net and tennis balls. This would be great for our special education students in adaptive PE. Thanks for sharing Shannon.

Good for you, Lily! I’ve heard about these mini-nets – glad to hear they work as advertised. Tennis is such a wonderful game and I just got my “fix” watching the U.S. Open. Raphael Nadal is amazing.
